How to use social posters in the lessons

Social posters are a part of social advertising which is the use of advertising to inform the public about a social issue or to influence their behavior (wikipedia). They are powerful tools for esl lessons since they are provocative and leave nobody indifferent. Let’s use them for instilling good moral values in students and developing speaking skills.

How to use them in the lessons?

Possible tasks are the following:

• Expressing opinion about the poster: Look at the poster. Do you agree with the message in it?

  

• Compare and contrast two posters using the questions: Which poster would  most likely make people smoke less? Why?

  

• Guess what this poster is about.Cover the message in a poster and elicit the answers.

  

• Discuss the questions:
  Is talking on mobile phone while driving banned in your country?
  Do you agree that people shouldn’t do other things like talking, eating or looking for something while driving?
  Do you drive? Are you often distracted by other things while driving?

  

• Make your own poster to promote ecological awareness.
