Preparing the learners for studying abroad

Some of the students you are teaching English are probably going to study abroad, and that is the main reason they have applied for the English course. It is not only English they are aiming at, but there are also some other things they will need to prepare before they move there.

Studying abroad can be challenging; they will face a new culture, new environment, new requirements, a new language, and new standards. The student needs to be ready for all these, not to give up in the middle of their way. You will need not only to teach the language but provide the toolkit to the students to be ready for studying abroad.

Help them to investigate the course they have chosen

When the students have already been accepted to the university what they can do is to investigate the university course they have chosen. You can help them navigate the university website, do a more sophisticated analysis of the course. You can ask your student to prepare a presentation about his or her expectations of the course they will be studying.

Secondly, you can recommend your students to do some networking with former or current students of the university. This will help them ask questions, find out something they cannot read on the website, or get some recommendations or tips that will help them to prepare better for the coming course. They can ask about main assignments, and you can help your students to practice writing such assignments as a report or an essay, a summary or a review, or a presentation. You can give some tasks to help the student practice the skills to complete such assignments.

Help them to investigate the culture and the city they are going to live in

It will be a great help if you walk your student through the culture and the environment they are going to live in. They will probably face a new reality, new cultural norms, and new social interaction requirements. Now you may get confused; what and how you can do it as an English teacher. Well, very easily. You can ask them to do a presentation for the class about the crime rate and safety issues in that city. Moreover, they can write guidance for a tourist for traveling to that city, for example, you can instruct your student to give a short speech about the youth and their main activities in that city. You can contribute two weeks of task-based teaching to get as much information and as many skills as possible.

Also, they can get the task to do a presentation on what are the Dos and Don’ts for a visitor in that city. Understanding safety issues and potential threats will be of great importance for them beforehand. All these kind of tasks will practice both the language use and give enough information and skills for living in that city or community.

Help them to plan their finances and budget

Another task-based lesson aim can be about finding out the main costs for an average student in that city. As we know, the students need to carefully plan their budget as they usually have limited finances and they can afford a lot of luxury. Usually, students are quite reserved in terms of spending because they can end up having no penny in an unknown city. So, it will be really helpful if your student receives a task to investigate the possible money wasting areas or places in that city.

Thus, to sum up, you will be the person who will best prepare your student to study abroad. Remember, the student needs to have enough skills and knowledge to move to another country or integrate into another educational culture to be successful.
