Google keeps surprising its users. In our previous articles we wrote about the benefits of Google Docs and Google Sheets in the ESL classroom. Today we are going to speak on Google Classroom, which is one more fundamental achievement in the IT-sphere introduced by Google.

Google Classroom

Google first presented Google Classroom in 2014. The platform combines Google Drive for assignment creation and distribution, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides for writing, Gmail for communication and Google Calendar for scheduling. In 2018 the classroom section was added.

It’s main purpose is to make collaborative work at schools and other educational institutions easy and paperless. It is free for schools, non-profits and anyone with a personal Google account.

With the help of the platform teachers can:

— create classes.

— give tasks.

— grade.

— send and receive feedback.

— track the progress of students.

— work anywhere and anytime on any device.

— save time and paper.

— communicate with students.

How to use Google Classroom?

Creating a class and adding students

In Google Classroom you can create as many classes as you want. To create a class just click the “+” button on the right side of the screen and fill in the details.

After you create the class, you will see it on the left side of your screen. Next step is to add students to this class. There are two ways to do it: either by inviting them via email or sharing the code provided by the platform.

Building topics for the lesson

If you already have a class, the next step is to create a lesson topic. All you need to do is to choose “Classwork” section and click “Create > Topic”.  After that you can add tasks to that topic.

Creating assignments

You can create any type of assignments for your students. Apart from that, you can write specific instructions for the completion of each task — a due date, a topic and points.

Moreover, if your students submit their homework late, Google will accept it but it will indicate that the homework from that one Google Classroom student account is received after the deadline.

You can also add files to the assignments you create. Files can be added from your computer, Google Drive, YouTube or can be simply a link. You can open the submitted files whenever and wherever you want and grade the completed tasks.

Holding discussions and testing knowledge with the Question Tool

If you are about to start a discussion with your students or test their knowledge on any material, the Questions will definitely be useful. You can create short or multiple choice questions. Furthermore, you can add a file, a YouTube video or a link to the question.

Creating polls with Google Classroom Quiz Assignments

Polls are exactly the same as in Google Forms; and you don’t have to make a separate poll in Google Forms: quiz assignments work perfectly in Google Classroom.

Making Google Classroom announcements

Google Classroom teacher account allows making announcements, having conversations based on them and posting reminders about homework. Both you and your students can respond to these announcements.

Adding and storing materials

To add materials into your topic, click “Create > Materials”. You can add any type of material: Google Docs, Google Sheets, Syllabus, videos, PDF files, etc. Use the “About” section to save the materials that you and your students will probably need throughout the school year.

Google Classroom is a great tool for working with your students, giving some tasks and checking them, grading, getting and giving feedback. It is a modern resource to engage your students in the learning process and face new challenges offered by technology.

How about the search functionality if, say, you have 7 groups of different levels and you really need to find an assignment by a key word?
    The search is currently unavailable.
    Are you kidding , Google?
