Summer is always amazing, especially for making picnics and reading our favourite books. Since the school year has already finished, we currently have more or less free time and can spend it just for ourselves. As for me, I am inclined to read books outdoors breathing fresh air and drinking squeezed orange juice. If I do not get this opportunity during the week, I just choose a cozy place in my flat, make a cup of coffee and start reading a book. Here is a list of the books that I strongly recommend you to read this summer.
This psychological book, the author of which is Dale Carnegie, will definitely change your life. It was first published in 1937 and is meant to bring light to people’s lives. Here the author encompasses different ideas of prominent people and philosophers who suggest solutions and tips on how to make people do what you want, how to deal with them, how to make a good impression and how to run and win business. If you wish to get the most out of the book, you will need a marker to highlight important paragraphs and to reread it several times a year till it becomes your lifestyle.
During the lockdown, many of us don’t see our friends and relatives, don’t meet new people. Unfortunately, we are getting used to it and meeting and communicating with people is becoming either undesirable or a hard thing to do. Hence, if you feel inferiority complex or you have some difficulty at making friends, this book will undoubtedly help you. Apart from that, there is a financial crisis beginning in all over the world and it is getting harder to set up a business or make good business partners. The book is aimed at helping you to solve this problem as well, as it gives tips on how to influence people.
This is a dystopian novel by English novelist George Orwell. It was published in 1949. The story takes place in an imagined future, the year 1984. The book is focused on the dystopian vision of a government that will do anything to control the citizens for “the sake of their happiness”. The very moment I started reading the book, I found too many similarities in our contemporary world and the quarantine. Like in the book, most of us are now deprived of seeing our friends or relatives out of fear that we can infect them or get infected. The hero of the novel, the protagonist, Winston Smith, is a diligent and skilful rank-and-file worker and Party member who secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion. He enters a forbidden relationship with a co-worker, Julia. Unfortunately, Winston is not strong enough and he abandons his lover “for the sake of Party”. He doesn’t even accept the fact that he has lost. On the contrary, he is happy because he has won the victory over himself. «He loved Big Brother».
“The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” is a self-help book by Robin Sharma, a Canadian writer and motivational speaker. The book was published in 1997 and has sold more than three million copies as of 2013. It provides a step-by-step approach to living with greater courage, balance, abundance, and joy. The book tells us a story of a lawyer — Julian Mantle. He discovers some wise and effective tips and lessons that teach us to develop joyful thoughts, follow our life and calling, value time, live fully, etc.
We are living in a time that we could hardly imagine experiencing ever 3-4 months ago. Many of us got desperate, unemployed and stressed. We seem to be in a bewildering situation where we can’t find a way out. Some people just waste their time being a couch potato and just complaining of everything. However, in spite of all the circumstances, we make the most of our time. While reading this book, you will start thinking in a positive way, you will value your time and will find ways to get to your calling.
The author of the book is Jojo Moyes who is an English journalist and romance novelist and was published in 2004. It tells us the story of a young woman who opens an eclectic shop and comes to terms with the secrets of her past. The only place Suzanna finds comfort is in “The Peacock Emporium”, the beautiful coffee bar and shop she opens that soon enchants her little town. There she makes perhaps the first real friends of her life.
The book will help you get rid of our reality and annoying news about the pandemic and you will travel to a wonderful world where there is love, struggling for happiness and sometimes suffering.
“The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World” is a book by the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu published in 2016. The authors discuss the challenges of living a joyful life and share their spiritual practices. They offer us the Eight Pillars of Joy, which provide the foundation for lasting happiness.
A changing world… We are now witnessing how the whole planet is changing, things that we used to do in the past, seem to be unreal. Despite all the challenges that we are facing now, the book will help us to find keys to happiness in a changing world.
The last but not least is “Chosen ones” written by Veronica Roth and published in April 2020. The book suits best for fantasy fiction lovers. It tells us a story of five teenagers, known as Chosen ones, were singled out by a prophecy to take down the Dark One. The chosen ones did their best to defeat him. After the Dark One fell, the world went back to normal, for everyone but them.
