Jingle bells, jingle bells… Streets are decorated with New Year ornaments, the smell of tangerines fills the air, and winter holidays are knocking on our doors. The way you end the year has a great influence not only on your personal life but also on work. Make the most out of the New Year mood and bring it to your classes!

Here we introduce several lesson ideas on how to wrap up the year and make New Year’s resolutions. Activities presented in the article are appropriate for Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate levels.

Task 1

Answer the questions.

  1. What springs to your mind when you look at this meme?
  2. Do you promise yourself to change radically in the New Year?
  3. What traditional ways of welcoming the New Year do you have in your family or in your region?
  4. Have you already decided how you are going to celebrate the New Year? If so, could you please share with us? If not, how would you like to celebrate it if you had every opportunity at your disposal?

Task 2

Watch the trailer of the film and answer the questions:

  1. What is the main idea of the movie?
  2. What New Year resolutions have the boy and the girl made?
  3. Have you ever promised yourself to say yes or no to anything? If so, how was it? If not, would you like to?
  4. What consequences can this type of resolution have?

Task 3

Let’s sum up the year and see how productive it was. Spin the wheel and answer the questions.

Task 4

Answer winter “Would you rather” questions and exchange ideas explaining your choice.

  1. Would you rather build an igloo all by yourself or spend time building a snowman with your buddies?
  2. Would you rather enjoy an extra day of the summer holidays or spend a cozy day at home while it snows outside?
  3. Would you rather wear four layers of warm gloves or put on three layers of comfortable mittens?
  4. Would you rather tolerate an endless summer or be in the loop of a never-ending winter?
  5. Would you rather opt for a carrot-like nose or be comfortable having a round, red nose?
  6. Would you rather interact with Frosty the Snowman or meet and interact with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer?
  7. Would you rather never get to witness snow or have it snow every day for the rest of the year?

Task 5

Write a letter to your future self. What dreams do you have? Which of them do you think will come true in 2023? Don’t forget to keep this letter in a safe place and open it only at the end of 2023 to see whether your predictions were right.

Task 6

Look at some of the New Year’s resolutions and make your own. Choose the design and create a nice list of resolutions. Present it to your classmates and share life hacks on how you will keep your New Year’s resolutions. Use Canva or other design programs to create an eye-catching list.
