  1. Warm-up
  2. Lead-in
  3. Pre-reading
  4. Reading
  5. Working with the context
  6. Guessing game

1. Warm-up

Have a look at these words. What spheres might these words and phrases relate to?

Lightbulb, to do experiments, electricity, exhibition, colour, designer, artist, to investigate, to invent, invention, inspiration, to create, design, unusual, creative, canvas, gallery, brush, paint, sketch

Key: art and science

Let’s sort them into two categories: art and science. Some words can be in both categories.

  • To inspire — inspiration
  • To create — creator – creative
  • To invent — invention — inventor

Example: art — a person who paints (artist); science — a person who does experiments and is an expert (scientist)

2. Lead-in

Let’s discuss some quotes of famous people. How do you understand them? Do you agree with them?

Thomas Edison:

  • «I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work».
  • «I never did a day’s work in my life. It was all fun».

Salvador Dali:

  • «I am not strange; I am just not normal».
  • «Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings».

Look at the photos and try to guess what Thomas Edison and Salvador Dali are famous for:

Example:
Thomas Edison was called a «wizard» because of his many important inventions. He created more than 1,000 devices on his own or with others. His best-known inventions include the record player, the lightbulb, and the motion-picture projector.

4. Reading

Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali made paintings, sculptures and films about the dreams he had. He painted melting clocks, clouds that look like faces and rocks that look like bodies.

Sounds weird right? Think about what your paintings would look like if you painted your dreams? Dali was involved with surrealism. This was an art movement where painters made dream-like scenes and showed situations that would be bizarre or impossible in real life.

You can always recognise him because he has a funny moustache. He liked to dress in crazy clothes and have long hair which people found very shocking at the time.

He was extremely scared of grasshoppers!

Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison was an American inventor. He was the seventh child in the family. His mother taught him at home. He was busy doing experiments in his lab. To buy some chemicals, he had to sell newspapers. He had a lot of jars with a note «Poison» in his lab. People could smell smog coming from the basement.

He developed many devices: the first machine for viewing films, the machine which could record sounds, the first lightbulb. He made the light safe to use. All his life he invented useful things for all people.

Who is it about?

  1. had a moustache;
  2. had poison in jars;
  3. liked extraordinary clothes;
  4. was born in a big family;
  5. created a logo for Chupa Chups company;
  6. was afraid of insects;
  7. earned money selling newspapers;
  8. painted his dreams;
  9. created a melting clock;
  10. created a lightbulb.

5. Working with the context

Ask AI about these people. Make any questions.

Example:
  • Where was [name] born?
  • Was he a good student?
  • Was he married?
  • Was he rich?
  • What did he look like?
  • What is he famous for?

Tell as many facts as you remember, use pictures if you need to remind students of some facts:

6. Guessing game

  • to be born;
  • to be famous for;
  • to be the first person to do smth.

Who would you like to talk about? Who was this person? (A singer, a sportsman, a politician?) Do you like him/her? Why / why not? Read the clues and guess the mysterious person.
