Например, семья, где царит спокойствие и порядок, переезжает в дом, полный хаоса, а вегетарианцев переселяют к людям, которые едят мясо.

Предлагаем провести похожий урок, но по теме лета и каникул — Holiday Swap. Вначале занятия создадим интригу, куда же отправятся наши герои, а в процессе отработаем грамматические структуры и повторим лексику по теме Holidays. Урок подойдет подросткам и взрослым уровня Elementary/Pre-intermediate.

1. Warm up

  • What type of holidays would you prefer? (Sightseeing tours, shopping tours, active holidays, beach holidays etc.)
  • How often do you travel?
  • Have you already had your ideal holiday?
  • Have you ever had a terrible holiday?
  • Do you usually plan your holidays?
  • How do you prepare for your trip?
  • Do you book tickets/hotel/restaurants?
  • Do you check tourist guides?
  • Do you compile a bucket list? 
  • What destinations are in your list?
  • Where would you never go?

The Holiday Swap matches up two very different families with completely opposing ideas of what makes a good holiday and sends them for two weeks on holidays they have planned for themselves. Both families have a challenge. 

The Holiday Swap guarantees stress and conflict but also surprising insights discovering what happens when one family’s idea of holiday heaven is someone else’s holiday hell!

Предлагаем следующие характеристики семей для вашего занятия. Кроме того, в этой части урока вы сможете отработать с учениками конструкцию to be going to и повторить лексику по теме Holidays:

Family 1: Bob and Mary with a child

Hi! Yahoo! We are in a reality show! Bob is a History teacher and I am a housewife. We bring up our daughter. I teach her myself. That is why I am learning all the time. 

We are going to St. Petersburg this summer. We do not like crowded seaside in August. Relaxing holidays are not for us. It is pretty boring. We are extremely active sporty people who like exploring new holiday destinations. So there are museums and cathedrals, excursions with a guide in our bucket list. We are crazy about going sightseeing and discovering new places. We prefer to stay at a good hotel with all conveniences and a nice city view. 

If we swapped holidays, we’d choose an excursion, The Golden Ring of Russia or any historic place where we could go sightseeing. We are intelligent people and do not want to waste our time just lying on the beach and sunbathing. So, we are ready for an adventure! Let’s swap our holidays!

Family 2: Susan and Jack with a child

Hi, there! We are a family of three. We prefer a staycation because we do not have any opportunities to travel. It is great when we do gardening in our dacha. 

This summer we are going to go camping. We’ve bought a tent. It is great to put up a tent on the bank of the river or lake in a quiet place. In the evening we are going to sit by the fire and enjoy fresh air. It is a relaxing holiday far from noisy cities and crowds of people. There are no conveniences. It is not a problem. What about cooking? We are going to grill or cook over the fire.

We would like to swap holidays and try something new for the first time in our lives. We would like to go to the Maldives or Bali and show the seaside to our son. Anyway, we are ready for this challenge! Let’s swap our holidays!

Complete the sentences with a correct grammar construction and a right phrase:

Family 1: Bob and Mary with a child

Key:

It was horrible. There were no conveniences like hot water or the internet and our child got bored. We were not lucky with the weather. It was raining all week. Our tent and clothes were wet. We woke up with the sunrise and were exhausted and sleepy. These mosquitoes drove us crazy! So, camping is definitely not our type of holiday. It was so quiet and boring. Thank God I had some books with me. In conclusion we’d like to say that next time we will go on a city trip as we planned before.

Family 2: Susan and Jack with a child

Make up a story feedback yourself. Use the given words:

  2. Why did the first family not like the holiday? Why did the second family not like the holiday?
  3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of camping / city tours?
  4. What holidays would you choose?
