Задание 4. Обсуждение вопросов

Дальше предложите обсудить вопросы.

Read the questions and discuss them with your teacher:

  1. Do you think that the same stages apply to long-distance relationships?
  2. Which stage is the most difficult to be in? Why?
  3. How far into a relationship do couples tend to break up? Are there specific time points? Why?
  4. Why do people who used to love each other break up one day? Does it happen because of some differences in their personalities or are there some other circumstances that may cause them to split up?

Дождитесь ответа на последний вопрос и обсудите причины расставаний из списка ниже. После этого расскажите о самых распространённых причинах по версии сайта Psychology Today.

Choose the three most common reasons for a break-up and explain your choice:

According to Psychology Today, the most common reasons for conflicts in relationships are supposed to be the following:

People tend to break up because of a lack of mutual support and understanding rather than because of a lack of money or relationships with their in-laws.

Задание 6. Ситуации по ролям

Познакомьте учеников с ситуациями, чтобы они выбрали для себя самую интересную и подготовили высказывание по ней.

Study the situations and choose one that you would like to roleplay.

Situation 1. I want to help my friend

Imagine your friend goes through a tough break-up, and you want to cheer them up with some uplifting movies. Recommend at least three films that could help heal their heart and lift their spirits.

Teacher: I’ll go first: «The Holiday»…

Useful words and phrases:

  • feel-good;
  • to take your mind off smth;
  • to cheer up;
  • to feel down;
  • tough times;
  • a little escape;
  • better days are ahead.
Possible answers:
  • I know things are really hard right now, but maybe watching some feel-good movies could help take your mind off things.
  • If you want, I can suggest a few movies that always cheer me up when I’m feeling down.
  • These films have helped me through tough times — they might do the same for you.
  • Sometimes a good movie can be like a little escape and remind you that better days are ahead.

Situation 2. I want to discuss a recent argument

You and your partner are discussing a recent argument at a party. You felt hurt because your partner seemed to ignore you at the party. Express this without blaming.

Useful phrases:

  • I felt a bit left out when…
  • It hurt me when…
  • I am not blaming you but I need to share how I feel…
  • I would appreciate it if you…
  • I’m not angry, but I am upset because…
  • Can we talk about this?

Situation 3. I want to be a psychologist

Imagine that you are a famous psychologist who is giving a lecture in front of a lot of people of different ages. Try to take into consideration the different generations you are talking to when giving your answers.

  1. Is it important for a couple to go through crises and hardships together to enhance their relationships?
  2. Is it possible to build a relationship in such a way that conflicts/crises do not arise at all?
  3. Are conflicts necessary for a relationship to grow?

Situation 4. I want to save the friendship

It is common for relationships to fade over time. You may be feeling this way because your friend has met someone new and they have become more interested in that person than in their old friends.

It could seem like your long-time friendship is not going to last much longer when you see each other less, call or write instead of meeting up, and talk about fewer topics together now than before.

Will you try to save the friendship or is it normal for some connections to die off over time?

Choose the card and answer the questions:

  1. I will save the friendship.
    • Why would you like to save the friendship?
    • What will you do to save it?
  1. I won’t save the friendship.
    • Why don’t you want to save the friendship?
    • What will you do if your ex-friend tries to restore the relationship that you are not interested in anymore?
    • What will you tell them?
