Teachers always ponder upon keeping their learners engaged in classroom activities. They get lucky when they deal with enthusiastic students but there are cases when it is a real hardship for teachers to ignite enthusiasm among learners. the fact is that students can be intrinsically or extrinsically motivated to learn. Intrinsically motivated students learn for reasons such as mastery, challenge, curiosity, and enjoyment. However, extrinsically motivated students  learn for reasons such as performances, grades, rewards, and evaluations. In this article, we will mention the main factors that will motivate all students to learn the language with more enthusiasm.

Teacher enthusiasm

It sounds somehow tautological but enthusiastic teachers have better chances of having enthusiastic students. The teacher’s enthusiasm and energetic approach to the instruction process is more likely to lead to better academic results among students. When the learners see the way the teachers enjoy their work, how motivated they are to improve their learners’ language competence they rethink their learning goals. However, it is noteworthy to mention that teachers’ enthusiasm must be natural otherwise artificial smile or energy may give a reverse effect and the students may lose any interest in their studies.

Students must see the value of the learnt material

All learners irrespective of their learning goals lose their interest in studies if they don’t see any relevance of the learnt material to their goals. Therefore, teachers need to plan the lesson with this in mind. Nowadays, they have plenty of resources at hand to find any material their students need. It is also important to cater for their learners’ individual needs. In these cases, the teacher’s work will be returned back with doubled motivation from the students’ side.

Change the interaction channels

Most of the students like the interaction with their peers, working in groups, exchanging opinion with other learners. They see more value in what they are learning at the current moment. Some students may get very enthusiastic when they see others’ enthusiasm, when they pursue a common goal ( create a project, carry out a survey), etc.

Allow for Student-Chosen Projects

In many cases, teachers deprive the learners of the freedom connected with the learning process. Little seems to contribute to student enthusiasm more than their ability to choose their own presentation topics or projects. If they choose something they are truly interested in they will work with more enthusiasm on it. As a result, students come up with truly impressive research work.

Connect to the real world

Another great way of generating enthusiasm in the classroom is through connecting students’ learning material to the real world. One way of this is to invite a guest speaker who may deliver a nice speech on the topic being discussed.

City tours, field trips, visits to museums, restaurants, different events may encourage students greatly. When they have the chance to use the language items learnt in real-life scenarios they really get inspired. However, all these visits must be topic-based, follow some learnt material so that all the learners may participate effectively.

Allocate roles to students

Teachers always know their students’ strengths, weaknesses and personal characteristics. They can use this knowledge for the achievement of a better learning outcome. The teacher may assign some role to the students: each student may take the role of the teacher for delivering some part of the lesson (revision, play a game, manage the  group work, etc), allow them to set up groups, assign roles, lead a debate or presentation session. Their eyes will be brightened up when they see how they can contribute to the lesson.

Apart from praising the students for their results, teachers can help create enthusiasm through passing their own passion in the subject matter and permitting students to exercise their growing competence in the subject matter.
