Eurovision songs (Worksheet for Intermediate level)

One of the biggest international song contests — Eurovision 2020 was planned to be held in May in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Though it was cancelled because of the pandemic, a new show, “Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light” is going to be produced, to air in place of the Grand Final on 16 May. During the programme, all 41 songs that had been chosen to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 will be honoured in a non-competitive format. Participants from the past will also be invited to make an appearance. Together, the artists will perform “Love Shine a Light” from their respective home countries.

We have prepared a worksheet with Eurovision songs to discuss with your students before the event. It is designed for intermediate level to boost their listening and speaking skills.

The fact that “Feker Libi” is sung in five languages conveys the universality of her message: love is the most important thing we have, regardless of where we live or what language we speak. The inclusion of the imaginary language in the lyrics only adds to this: love can be felt even in the absence of linguistic understanding.
