Using polls in the ESL classroom has recently become very popular. Many teachers turn to technology, mainly to polling tools to hold student’s attention and to make them participate in the learning process. Others apply polls to run quizzes and competitions, to check the understanding of a topic, to run anonymous surveys and  to receive feedback. Irrespective of the purpose of polls in the classroom, you should be aware of programs that can help you create polls effectively and in a short time. Here we present two well-known instruments with detailed instructions on how to use them.

Google Forms

Google Forms — along with Docs, Sheets, and Slides — is a part of Google’s online apps suite of tools to help you create forms for data collection purposes for free. With Google Forms it is very easy to save data directly to a spreadsheet. If you want to collect data for your spreadsheets, you will need to use Google Forms. One of the outstanding features of this app is that you can easily share it with others to get responses just by sending them the link. Apart from that, if you want your colleagues to look through and edit your poll, you can add collaborators.

How to use Google Forms?

There are many ways we can use Google Forms in the classroom.

— Questionnaires for students

— Research surveys (led by students)

— Worksheets

— Quizzes

— Evaluations

If you are using Google Drive, just click on the plus icon and choose Google Forms or click on the link. You can start with a blank document or select from a number of templates.

Then name and describe your form. If you want to add details about the aim of the form or how you want people proceed, click on the form description button below the title. When writing questions, you can select different options of answer format, such as short answer, paragraph, multiple choice, check box, or drop down.

At the bottom of each content block there are icons that allow you to duplicate or delete it. You can also mark whether answering a question is obligatory or not. If you want to add extra details to the question, click on the line of three dots next to the Required.

Next to the Questions tab on the top of the page, you’ll find the Responses tab. Here you can choose how you want to receive completed forms.

Zoom is a service which provides video and audio conferencing. It is a useful tool for online teachers, who can hold both private and group lessons. If you are a Pro user of Zoom, you can use it not only for meetings but also for creating polls during the lessons. The polling feature for meetings allows you to create multiple-choice polling questions for the meetings. You will be able to launch the poll during your meeting and gather the responses from your attendees.

How to create polls with Zoom?

If you want to use Zoom to create polls, you must be a Pro user (a paid account user who can host unlimited meetings on the public cloud) and turn on pollings in basic meeting settings.

Next comes the creation of polls. Select the scheduled meeting, scroll down and choose the Poll option>Add. Enter the title and your questions.

Select whether you want the question to be single choice (participants can only choose one answer) or multiple choice question (participants can choose multiple answers). Then write the answers to your questions and click Save. You can create not more than 25 polls for each meeting.

You can also create a poll during the meeting, just click Polling and launch it. The participants will answer the questions, and you will see their replies live. When you want to finish it, you just need to click End Poll. If you want the participants of the meeting to see the results, you can share them by clicking Share results.
