Важно дать устную практику past modals. Конструкция громоздкая и может вначале пугать. Некоторые студенты сразу утверждают, что никогда не запомнят и не произнесут ее быстро. Давайте переубедим их. Покажем на примерах, что past modals действительно употребляются и даже необходимы в речи в разных обстоятельствах.

А. Обсудите книгу, фильм, героев, эпоху. Задайте соответствующие вопросы:

• Могла судьба героя сложится иначе? Could the life of that protagonist have turned another way?
• Мог бы автор придумать другой конец? What another end might the author have created?
• Что следовало бы делать главной героине в тех обстоятельствах? What should she have done in these circumstances?

B. Обсудите личный опыт. Например:

• Если бы тогда учил английский, мог бы получить более интересное предложение по работе?
• Что надо было бы делать, чтобы быть в хорошей форме?
• Если бы мог водить машину, куда бы смог поехать?

С. Agree or disagree. Imagine that you will discuss in the future how life used to be in the past:

– VR could not have replaced the real world
– people should have learned foreign languages
– children should have eaten healthier food
– developers should not have invented new devices

Say more ideas about what people might regret about in future.

Translate from Russian into English using past modals.

• Он не мог провалить экзамен по вождению! Он водит уже 20 лет.
