Упражнение 1. A proverb

Покажите ученикам пословицу «Clothes do not make the man» и спросите, как они понимают ее. Если студенты затрудняются с ответом, дайте несколько вариантов для выбора. Например: 

Read the proverb and choose the correct definition. 

«Clothes do not make the man» means: 

  • Good clothes improve men’s appearance. 
  • You cannot accurately judge a person solely by appearances.
  • To be dressed in their best clothes for no particular reason.
 Key: You cannot accurately judge a person solely by appearances.

Упражнение 2. Can You Guess Who These People Are From Their Appearances

Предложите студентам сыграть в игру «Can You Guess Who These People Are From Their Appearances». Покажите ученикам заранее выбранные фотографии нескольких людей. Постарайтесь выбрать тех, кого студенты не знают. 

Let’s play a game entitled “Can You Guess Who These People Are From Their Appearances”.

Look at the people in the pictures and describe what they are wearing. Share your thoughts and assumptions (occupation, financial status, hobbies and interests, personality traits) about them.

Person №1 — Jack Dorsey

Jack Dorsey is an entrepreneur who co-founded X, formerly known as Twitter, in 2006 and was the CEO of the company till 2008. Besides that, Jack is known for making big philanthropic contributions to such causes as fighting racism, improving public education and health in 3rd world countries. According to Forbes, his estimated net worth as of October 2021 was 14.9 billion dollars.
Person №2 — Ted Bundy

Ted Bundy was an American serial killer who kidnapped and murdered numerous young women and girls during the 1970s and possibly earlier. After more than a decade of denials, he confessed to 30 homicides, committed in seven states between 1974 and 1978. His true victim total is unknown and could be much higher. Bundy was regarded as handsome and charismatic, traits that he exploited to win the trust of his victims and society.
Person № 3 — Helena Christensen

Helena Christensen is a Danish-Peruvian model and photographer. She is a former Victoria’s Secret Angel, clothing designer and beauty queen. Christensen was also the co-founder and original creative director for Nylon magazine, and she is a supporter of funding for breast cancer organizations and other philanthropic charities.

  1. Are the people in the pictures properly dressed for: work, a party, the opera, a wedding ceremony, housework, shopping? Why?
  2. Which of the styles do you like best? Why?
  3. Which style is the most similar to the way you dress? Describe your style in clothes.
  4. Are clothes important in your life? Do they matter? Do you spend a lot of time thinking about what to wear?

На YouTube канале Glamour есть плейлист «Body talk», где женщины разной комплекции примеряют одну и ту же одежду и обсуждают свой опыт покупки и ношения этих вещей.

Эти видео можно использовать как для изучения названий разных вещей в одежде, так и для более детального просмотра конкретной вещи. Вы можете показать подборку видео из плейлиста и попросить студентов выбрать интересную для них одежду. Например, ученикам интересно видео про джинсы.

Сначала задайте студентам вопросы для разминки.

  1. How many pairs of jeans do you have? Describe your best pair of jeans! 
  2. What do you hate about shopping for jeans? And what do you love about it? 
  3. Will jeans go out of fashion one day? Why (not)?

Начните упражнение с обсуждения следующего вопроса: 

How often do you come across sales? Are you ready to visit one? 

Попросите представить ситуацию: ученики попадают на распродажу, им нужно очень быстро решить, что из представленных вещей купить. При этом их бюджет ограничен. 

Попросите студентов выбрать предметы, которые они бы купили и которые соответствовали бы бюджету. Затем откройте спойлер под предметами и попросите учеников разобраться с задачей.

Some problems

  • Sneakers: You buy a pair of sneakers but 5 minutes later see exactly the same pair in a nearby shop for $8.
  • Windbreaker: When you first went for a walk in it, it started raining, so you realized that the windbreaker wasn’t waterproof.
  • A pair of jeans: When you try them on, you see that the zipper is broken.

  • A belt: A belt was claimed to be unisex. However, when you try frying on it, everything sticks.
  • A sleeveless jacket: When you come home, you find out that it isn’t in your bag.
